What Is a micro-internship

Not a Class. Not Busywork.
Real Projects, Real Companies.

career
Choose a Project

Start by reflecting on your own strengths and interests, then select a six-week, self-paced project connected to a real participating company. Complete meaningful work using guided templates, resources, and support from mentors and peers.

Build Real Experience

Finish something you can genuinely show off, not just describe. Every Micro-Internship builds real experience, a stronger portfolio, and a story you'll actually want to tell in interviews.

resume
Earn Credentials

Finish your project and walk away with real proof of what you can do: an SCLA-issued Letter of Recognition naming the company your project was connected to, 3 college credits, and a stackable digital credential.

What You’ll Build

Projects Across Every Field and Industry

You don't need a technical background. You need a problem worth solving and the commitment to see it through.

Code & Tools

A mobile app, browser extension, data dashboard, API, or automation tool. If you build it, you can show it.

Creative Content

A podcast, short film, digital archive, interactive experience, or media project. Creative work is employer-facing work.

Analysis & Strategy

A research report, white paper, data analysis, policy memo, or market map. Companies need thinkers as much as builders.

Community Initiative

A nonprofit plan, advocacy campaign, or community project. Real-world impact is real-world experience.

Physical Prototypes

A hardware rig, 3D-printed object, robotics concept, or tangible prototype. If you can describe it, you can present it.

Step 1

Choose Your Project

Start by reflecting on your own strengths and interests, then browse the company opportunity library and select a project that actually excites you. Not sure where to start? The onboarding assessment helps you narrow it down.

Step 2

Build With Support

Work independently on your project using SCLA's templates, resources, and tools. Weekly kickoffs, mentor office hours, and peer standups keep you moving without managing you.

Step 4

Earn Your Credentials

Receive your Letter of Recognition, digital badge, and portfolio artifact. Add the company name to your resume and LinkedIn profile. You did the work, now it's yours to show. From here, you're part of the SCLA alumni community, with continued access to opportunities as you keep building.

frequently asked questions

Any enrolled SCLA Academy member at a participating college: undergraduates, graduate students, and recent graduates within 12 months of completion. U.S.-based members only for this launch.

No. A Micro-Internship is an employer-provided, SCLA-led learning experience, not a paid internship and not a job placement. You're not an employee, intern, or agent of any company connected to your project, and completing one doesn't guarantee an interview, job, or employer review. What you get instead is real experience, real credentials, and real proof of what you can do.

No, it's unpaid. What you get instead is a portfolio-ready project, an SCLA-issued Letter of Recognition, 3 college credits, and a story you can actually use in every interview going forward.

We suggest 10 hours per week over four to six consecutive weeks. It's self-paced, so you can go faster or take longer if you need to. The more consistently you build, the more you'll have to show.

Yes. Everything is virtual. All sessions, mentorship, and project work happen online.

Every submission is checked against a clear rubric. AI drafts an initial score and has to point to exactly what in your work supports it, then a human coach reviews that reasoning, adjusts if needed, and signs off, no score goes out without that human signature. A 70 means your project is complete; an 80 is what earns your college credit. If you don't hit that the first time, resubmission is unlimited.

Yes. We built this program to be AI-centric on purpose. You're encouraged to use modern tools, including AI, to move faster and think better. There's nothing to purchase and nothing to download, and no AI data is shared with any outside agency. If AI isn't for you, that's okay: non-AI programming is available for students who want it. Either way, you're still responsible for the quality and originality of what you create and submit.
